Post Operative Instructions Following Root Canal Treatment

  1. While you are still numb, please avoid eating/drinking anything hot.
  2. You may have a temporary filling placed in your tooth:
    1. If a root canal treatment has been started, an additional appointment must be scheduled to complete the procedure.
    2. Between appointments, a thin layer of the temporary filling may wear down, however, if the entire filling comes out please contact us.
  3. You may experience some discomfort/tenderness on the treated tooth. Your jaw may also be tender from keeping it open for an extended period of time during the appointment. This is not unusual and the inflammation can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications. The discomfort may last from 7 to 14 days.
  4. If you were prescribed a medication, please continue this medication, unless otherwise instructed by the treating dentist. Please notify our clinic of any problems that may arise from the medication being taken. (Please note that antibiotics should be taken until completion.)
  5. Please contact us if you develop swelling in the affected area or a return of the original symptoms.
  6. Root canal treatment is only one part of returning your tooth to full function. Depending on the amount of tooth structure remaining there are a few options for restoring your tooth.
    1. Filling
    2. Crown
    3. Post / Core / Crown
  7. In order to verify the successful healing of root canal therapy, a radiograph is needed of the treated tooth one-year post-completion.
